Title of Project: What’s in Your Lunch?            by Amy Fine
Purpose of the Project:
Students will plan a balanced meal to “pack in their
lunchbox.”

Description of the Project: This placemat “lunchbox” is the perfect opportunity
for students to practice choosing foods from each food group to create a balanced
meal.

CSHE Area that this project aligns with: Nutrition

Health Education GLEs that this project aligns with:
ME2A2: Identify healthy food choices (see MyPyramid.gov) in each of the five food
groups (sorting play food or pictures into food groups).

Developmentally appropriate grade or grade-range: K-3

Equipment/Items needed to make this project:
1 small white poster board, large rectangle of yellow paper, 8 ½ x 11 in. colored
paper (orange, green, red, blue, purple), black construction paper, 2 in. letter die
cuts, colored markers (orange, green, red, blue, purple), 50 pictures or more of
labeled food choices from each of the food groups (pictures displayed are from http:
//www.fns.usda.gov/tn/resources/go-fish_color.pdf), laminator, fine point pen, 8 ½ x
11 in. picture of open lunch box, rubber cement

Specific directions:
1.        Cover the small poster board with yellow paper.
2.        Cut the food pictures into squares.  Sort into food groups.
3.        Glue squares onto coordinating colored paper based on the food group.
4.        Cut out the food from the colored paper to show no white around the food
item.
5.        Label each food item on the back with fine point pen.
6.        Cut out open lunch box picture and glue to the center of the small poster
board on the yellow side.
7.        Cut out the words “What’s in Your Lunch?” with die cuts out of black paper.
8.        Glue letters above the lunch box.
9.        Provide a key in the lower right hand corner of the placement: (orange dot)
grains, (green dot) vegetables, (red dot) fruits, (blue dot) milk, and (purple dot)
meat and beans.
10.        Laminate the small pieces of food and the placemat.  Cut out.

Cost to make the project: $5; I only used resources available at the school
media lab.  I only paid for colored printing on campus. 2 hours; I spent most of the
time cutting out the 125 pictures of food which I then glued on to construction paper
and more tediously cut out and labeled.  I then had to cut them out again after
laminating.
