Unit 2: Time for Rhymes: Integrating Poetry
Theme: Time for Rhymes: Understanding the Genre of Poetry

In most schools around the country, fourth graders take some time to
identify the differentiating characteristics of each genre.  This is an
important concept to grasp, and literature focus units serve as a
perfect instructional method to do so.  In this unit, students will learn to
identify the key text features that define the genre of poetry.  They also
will have opportunities to compare different authors and different
styles of poetry, and most importantly, they will have a chance to apply
what they learn and to write their own poetry.
